Terraferma

I thought this film did a good job depicting an underlying modern problem facing Italy that hasn't been depicted in any of the films we have watched so far: immigration. Italy faces immigration problems from Africa because of its close proximity and acts as a channel into the rest of Europe. For this reason I thought the film was a good representative of Italian cinema showing underlying political issues in the country. I also thought the film did a good job of using the theme of contrasts of human nature. For example, willingness to help others vs. a fear of persecution from helping said people.

  1. I agree with liking the political and social issues that the film brought up. It was a situation that I had for surely never thought about before, and I enjoyed learning about it, albeit being difficult at times. Filippo finds himself at severe crossroads physically and morally. Although the ending was ambiguous in story, it at least closed some of the decision-making arc of the character.

  2. The immigration "crisis" is indeed a problem that Italy as well as many countries in the EU continue to face. Crialese really captures the inhumanity of the situation and forced the viewer to think about the life of the natives on the island.

  3. I also enjoyed this film due to its relevance to the social and political issues that are currently occurring in Europe, especially in Italy. One of the first topics my host family discussed with me was the constant debate and disagreement on how to deal with the vast amount of undocumented immigrants finding their way into Italy. Bringing up this extremely relevant issue in film is very typical of Italian cinema. I really enjoyed the film because of its informational as well as entertaining value.
