The Mafia Only kills in the summer
As someone who personally loves Palermo, I genuinely enjoyed watching this film. The scenery showed a lot of the city and provided me with enough knowledge of the Mafioso history of the city that I was granted a better understanding of it by the time the film ended. At first, I was slightly put off by the satire being made on mob whackings, but when I realized that it was a tool to shed light on the somewhat broken society that allowed these people to come into power in the first place, I actually appreciated it a lot more and liked the movie a lot more as a result. Although, the only problem I still had with the film was with Flora, she did not seem very compelling but rather a typical female character who is the love interest of a male that can be found in any other movie, I did not understand Arturo's infatuation with her.

I also loved this movie because of the scenery in the film. I felt uneasy in the beginning of the film as well due to the harsh satire, although I was not sure whether it was serious or to prove a point. In the end, and after researching the film afterwards, I found the film to be a homage paid to the policemen and the magistrates who fought and gave their lives between the late 1970s and 1992. The heroes of legality that were martyred in the attempt to dismantle the Sicilian Mafia. Once reading this, I had a better understanding of the film and ended up liking it a lot more.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your opinion on Flora's character and her lack of dynamism. I couldn't tell if the film was aimed more at the political situation/change in Palermo or the story of Arturo and Flora. I also thought that Flora's change in opinion of Arturo came out of nowhere and lacked a bit of realism. Maybe my opinion of the film will change after discussing it for some time, but as of right now, it just did not do enough for me.
